Bottom up Adaptation Strategies for a Sustainable Europe

Knowledge for Climate - Climate proof flood risk management (Deltares project)

Deltares currently works on two 'Knowledge for Climate' projects: Climate Proof Flood Risk Management and Climate Proof Water Supply

Climate Proof Flood Risk Management

The design of adaptation responses to flood risks requires insight in the effectiveness of individual adaptation measures, such as flexible structures to control water levels and measures to reduce wave attacks. The main aim of this research programme is to perform an in-depth interdisciplinary assessment of these innovative types of measures. The project aims to develop methods for assessing the effectiveness of technical measures and policy instruments to reduce flood risks the implications of their implementation for urban and countryside environments the robustness (resilience and resistance) of comprehensive FRM strategies in view of uncertainty about climate change provide guidelines for the design of long-term FRM alternatives and individual measures based on effectiveness (flood risk reduction), robustness and their contribution to the development of entire regions (multi-functional use, natural values and spatial quality)

Climate Proof Water Supply

The aim of this research programme is to develop robust, flexible and long-term solutions from a local to regional perspective, which can contribute to successful strategies to bridge the growing mismatch between demand and supply of fresh water (quantity and salinity) in the changing Dutch Delta. The central question to be addressed by the Consortium is: What are opportunities and adaptation strategies for fresh water supply and water quality in the Netherlands, given the changing physical boundary conditions in evaporation, precipitation, river discharges, sea level rise and salt water intrusion?
