Summary: EEA Grants Conference 'Too Much, Too Little - The Role of Water in Adaptation to Climate Change'

This conference, held 7-9 October, was co-organised by the BASE project and examined the role of water in adaptation to climate change. It was hosted by the Governments of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Portugal hosted a concurrent conference on the role of water in adaptation to climate change. Over 200 individuals contributed to the conference, including representatives of the science and policy communities, as well as representatives other other disciplines, including music and art.

Several BASE team members also presented research related to the project: 

  • Dr. Grit Martinez, Ecologic Institute, contributed to the Storm Surges and Coastal Erosion session with a presentation entitled 'Storm Surges and Coastal Erosion and Their Social-cultural Dimension. A Perspective from Coastal Regions in Germany'  (Download presentation).
  • Zuzana Harmackova, CzechGlobe, contributed to the Agriculture session with a presentation entitled of 'Agriculture and Adaptation to Climate Change in the Czech Republic' (Download presentation).

Topics explored under the conference included:

  • The policy framework(s) for adaptation to climate change;
  • The news in science related to impacts and vulnerabilities of water and water related sectors;
  • The experiences in water related national challenges, such as drought, floods or storm surges;
  • Adaptation policies and practices in cities, agriculture and in coastal areas;
  • The need to think beyond national borders
